WSU Libraries Planning Committee:

Mary Gilles(Co-Chair), Marilyn Von Seggern(Co-Chair), Janet Chisman, Vicki Croft, Rhonda Gaylord, Daryl Herbison, Lauren McNiece, Ingrid Mifflin, Jill Palmer, Barbara Paulson, Kay Vyhnanek, Sharon Walbridge, John Webb, Leslie Wykoff and Christy Zlatos.

The Planning Committee called a town meeting on June 5, 1996, to ask library employees what services they thought the Libraries should offer. A list of services was generated at that meeting and from lists forwarded by branch campus libraries and ICNE Library. It was not meant to be an exhaustive list of all possible services, respondants added other services to the list.

Respondants were asked to use a total of 20 check-marks to indicate which of services they think will be most in demand in the future. The respondant could request additional information on any service by placing an asterisk '*' next to it.

The return of completed surveys Kathy McGreevy was requested by Monday, June 24, 1996. The following compilation represents the results as of June 28, 1996.

Go to bottom of list.

43 Provide accurate and complete information on holdings and
location information in Griffin

42 Reflect all of the Libraries' holdings in Griffin,
including documents, major microfilms, WSU publications,
etc.

35 Electronic information services access across campus

34 Keep photocopiers working

33 Re-shelve all books within four hours

31 Provide up-to-date status information on all Griffin
holdings

30 Provide change machines for users

28 Reclass Dewey and Jackson collections so that users have
fewer classifications to deal with

27 Enough staff to adequately provide whatever services we
do provide (or re-organize the work to accomplish all of
the desired/ needed services)

27 Re-shelve all books within 24 hours

26 Provide human services in the electronic age; don't lose
the human touch

25 Ensure that new books are readily available once they are
cataloged

25 Be courteous to users (and one another)

* 25 Provide instruction for students on the ethics of library
use and the consequences of misuse. Outreach to dorms,
organizations, and the Residence Life program

24 Expand reference service in terms of more hours and in
terms of proactivity (don't wait for students to ask for
help)

24 Evaluate our services - are we doing what users want?

24 Partner with faculty on assignments so that the library
and information side of learning is better coordinated.
We have faculty who are also adjunct faculty of departments;
this is actually better than in many places.

24 A reliable, clean OPAC

22 Place caps on user re maximum materials that they can
check out to provide equitable access to materials

22 Better organize compact storage - weed and re-locate
materials as appropriate

21 Weed all collections.
Because materials in a research library are timeless in
regard to value to scholars, weeding shouldn't have to be
done and is a kin to censorship.
Bad decisions - that's another thing.

21 Establish and maintain an effective preservation program

21 Standardize library policies and practices at WSU Pullman
- in that effort, aim for the highest level of service,
not the lowest commonalty

20 Get pre-1976 federal documents holdings in Griffin

20 Provide instruction programs for users and for staff

19 Copy Center - expand hours beyond the traditional
business day to when services are actually needed

19 Any library materials removed from the shelves by
Libraries staff should be checked out

19 Provide appropriate user education to match the changing
information environment - broader concepts (the lines
between teaching and information seeking are blurring
as are the lines between regular classroom instruction
and information)

19 Improved and more current training in all systems

18 Partner with faculty on Virtual WSU projects

* 18 Provide services to meet the University's land grant
mission - outreach beyond the traditional University

* 18 Seamless searching - sit at one terminal and do all of
your searching, checking Griffin, filling out forms, etc.

* 17 Consider providing information services not being
provided by IT -- ISS.

17 Make Griffin locations reflect actual stack location;
perhaps do a map (you are here - the item you want is
here) as Neill Public Library has done with its children's
interface

16 Keep LAO open during the noon hour

16 Cross-training for library employees (faculty and staff)
to broaden understanding and encourage efficiency and
effectiveness.

16 More full text resources

16 Superb reference service

15 Cross train all staff so that the burden* of evening
and weekend hours does not fall on a small group of people

15 Discipline problem patrons

14 Unmediated document delivery (users request materials
directly and WSU pays, instead of journal subscriptions)

13 Establish and publicize a fee system for services to
non-traditional (outside the University community) users

13 Electronic ILL for entire WSU community - simple form
that covers all WSU Libraries as well as outside ILL
requests

* 12 Provide delivery between libraries on the WSU Pullman
campus

12 Provide and publicize reference by appointment for more
involved information needs

11 Educate faculty regarding copyright issues, especially
in relation to reserve materials

* 11 Acquire and organize information
* How, where, what?

10 Provide a list of new books on the Web Page

10 Provide improved service to the disabled, from building
access to equipment

10 Include more library information in the Evergreen - a
regular weekly feature, even if the Libraries have to pay
for the space

10 Rotate staff so that there is more cross training

10 Provide staff training in how to deal with difficult people

*** 9 Digitize reserve collections

9 Better remote access to library resources (better
Web Pages, etc.)

9 Request that the Library Director hold quarterly updates
for all Library staff, including ECLS via WHETS

8 Provide vending machines with supplies such as pencils
and note pads

8 Do library tours on major University weekends (Mom's,
Dad's, Homecoming, graduation, etc.)

8 Do library public service announcements on the student
radio and television stations

8 Develop a student chapter of the Friends of the Libraries

8 Establish a complaint department

7 Add table of contents information to the monograph
bibliographic records in Griffin that do not have that
information.

7 Expand MASC hours

7 Course related bibliographic instruction

5 Expand Owen and all branch library hours

5 Provide more library information on the Web Page

5 Provide document delivery mail service for a fee

5 Direct document delivery to faculty

5 Better access to Web resources

5 Group study areas

* 4 Non-course related workshops

3 Direct research updating service (UnCover, Reveal,
etc.) to faculty

2 Evaluate our services - are we doing what users want?
Perhaps a library interest group - meeting with
interested faculty and staff periodically.
Computer polling? Questionnaires?

1 Shelf- read

1 Provide a list of new books on the Web Page grouped by
subject area perhaps distributed electronically upon
request

1 Place caps on user regarding maximum materials that they
can check out to provide equitable access to materials
and how often the same user may renew materials

1 Enough staff to adequately provide whatever services we
do provide

1 Especially public service librarians, reputation very
poor as a whole

1 Establish a complaint department with the resources and
authority to solve problems

1 Direct document delivery to faculty (i.e.- faxes & e-mail)

* 1 Provide change machines for users ($20, $10, $5 at Science)

top of the list.

Additional Services/ Comments:

2 Maintain and expand access to media materials (AV &
non-print items)

1 Either supervisors should be present during all open hours
or techs should be upgraded for late hours, supervising
students and being responsible for the Library during
those hours

1 Limit the amount of books a user can check out at one
semester. A lot of people have several hundred books
checked out

1 Provide location/direction service - perhaps by student
employees - to assist in locating materials in the stacks

1 Employ more qualified staff instead of relying on so much
timeslip help with fluctuating schedules

1 More databases etc. such as Current Contents, networked CAB

1 Direct linkage from bibliographic database citations to
Griffin serial holdings.
This list does not include MMS Services.
