Meeting minutes

Minutes of the March 13 meeting were approved with changes to the first paragraph under "Trust/Check-in".

Check-in

Members of the Committee reported that among library employees there is fear about demotions in the planning process. It was suggested that Planning Committee members be asked to visit staff meetings of units other than their own in order to address concerns.

It is too early to know whether reorganization will be a part of the Planning Committee recommendations. A good time for the first Town Meeting may be when the draft values statement is ready.

Provost's Task Force on Libraries

Material related to the Provost's task force on Libraries was distributed to Planning Committee members after the last committee meeting. It was noted that the primary focus was collections and traditional library roles, not information skills and access vs. ownership, which are the primary issues in the library world.

University of Arizona Workshop

Nancy Baker indicated that one member of the Planning Committee could attend the U of A workshop, Living the future: process improvement and organizational change, (Tucson: 1-4 May 1996). Jill Palmer was selected to attend.

Education Library Appointment

The Committee expressed confusion regarding the filling of some open positions and not others. The Co-Chairs will talk with Nancy Baker about it.

It was noted that there is a procedure for handling internal faculty transfers in the Library Faculty Handbook and staff involvement is not mentioned. A formal memo regarding the need to address staff involvement in this process will be sent from the Planning Committee to the Library Faculty Affairs Committee.

Values

The subcommittee on values models presented their illustrations. It was decided to divide the Committee into four groups who will work with the models and present their draft values statements at the next meeting.

Web Page

It was reported that the Planning Committee Web Page now includes the values compilation and a reading list of items on reserve. It was suggested that Library Systems be asked to do library specific training for staff unfamiliar with Netscape. This request will be conveyed John Webb.

Next meeting

The Planning Committee will meet on Wednesday, April 03, 1996 at 8:30 AM in the New Holland WHETS room. The agenda will include values statement drafts and development of a timeline for the Committee's work.
