Attending: Janet Chisman, Vicki Croft, Rhonda Gaylord, Mary Gilles (Co-Chair), Daryl Herbison, Susan Jurow (ARL), Lauren McNiece, Jill Palmer, Barb Paulson, Marilyn Von Seggern (Co-Chair), Kay Vyhnanek, Sharon Walbridge (Recorder), John Webb, Leslie Wykoff, and Christy Zlatos.

Absent: Ingrid Mifflin.

The morning was spent in discussion with Susan Jurow. She noted that the following is expected from the Committee by Fall 1996: mission statement, values statement, vision statement, over-riding principles or framework, organization chart (over-riding structure), and decision-making process (communication and committees may appear here as well as in the organization chart).

The WSU Process

  • Record-keeping: each meeting will have notes taken. Decisions, consensus, and topics will be recorded, but there will not be a full record of discussion. There will be a record of why we did or decided something; meeting notes will be for the Committee (see discussion of March 6 for revision); related documents will be retained in official records; there will be tracking and identification of individual responsibilities; meeting notes will include attendees and absentees; Sharon Walbridge will serve as recorder with Jill Palmer as back-up; meeting notes will be distributed electronically via listserv.
  • Meeting Logistics: weekly meetings, two hours, over WHETS.
  • Group decisions: too early to know whether consensus is possible, alternatives should be developed for seeking input from the wider Library community.
  • Confidentiality: details and premature discussion of issues outside the Committee should be avoided. Members should be free to speak in generalities.
  • Communication: regular report back sessions and discussion sessions are needed.
  • Group ethics: no name calling, no monopolization, no steam rolling, all members equal, gut feelings and intuition count even if you cannot rationally describe or justify them at the time.
  • Time commitments: values workshops will be time-consuming. Subgroups may operate at times in lieu of the full committee. We will ask Nancy Baker to make a statement of support to Committee members' managers and supervisors very soon.
  • Time frames: other than the Fall deadline, it is too early to plan detailed timelines.
  • Freedom to withdraw: Committee members need to feel free to withdraw now or at any point in the future if they so desire.
Values Workshops

Jill Palmer, Daryl Herbison, Janet Chisman, and Lauren McNiece will work on a plan for values workshops for the rest of the Libraries' staff.
