Meeting minutes

Minutes of the May 8 meeting: approved with a question from Marilyn Von Seggern concerning whether the group agreed that the co-chairs would talk with Nancy  Baker about surveys. Consensus was that we recommend to Baker that she appoint a group to develop and initiate a user survey to be implemented by this fall. The co-chairs will talk to Baker regarding the recommendation.

Brainstorming session: What do we want to move towards?

More emphasis on the lifelong learner as an employee.

Distance learning.

How fast are we going to transform?

Business will change and growth on campus will change - area that is untouched is the education of the worker. Competition is on the doorstep and if we can't see beyond the current trends we're in trouble. We need to be proactive. Identify as many types of learners as you can and plan for those users. Invent solutions before the problem occurs.

We need to supply the information to the learning center.

Need to explore new possible sources of support (Budget).

Libraries are not very good at selling, we give it away. Public institutions are not set up to sell but we need to become better at selling.

Virtual and traditional.

Got to have an organization where if you have to do something, you have the resources and authority to do what you need to do. You take responsibility.

Ability to change - need to work at a smooth transition. do it right. (Fed-Ex model).

Oriented/focused on the individual learner/client - move away from classroom structure.

Need to focus on electronic costumers - computerized tutorials.

Need to take a fresh look at what is possible - do some outreach. (Wal-Mart/Nordstroms).

Clarify our user base.

Less intimidating environment.

User education.

Take expertise of staff and use - identify and use staff knowledge/experiences.

Need better trainging programs, continuing education/retooling.

Brown bag sessions to share information/expertise. (Eudora, Microsoft, OCLC, etc...)

Share a little more then we are, especially with Griffin.

Share beyond this institution.

Continue to explore and utilize resource/development projects.

More consultation with everyone about use of project funds.

Balance between information overload and need to know.

Explore regional/unit listserves.

Ability to change - need to work at a smooth transition.

Organization that is on its toes and in motion so that it can meet demands.

Next meeting

Continue brainstorming.
