NOTE: The Committee met for an hour following the Town Meeting on library services.

Check-in

  • The Committee briefly discussed what the planning process means for the Libraries.

  • Ingrid Mifflin reported that staff are asking about updates on the Planning Committee Home Page. Lauren McNiece has had equipment difficulties and is trying to work them out with Library Systems. Updates will be added as soon as possible.

  • The sheets listing services that were developed during this morning's Town Meeting will be left up in room 422, Old Holland (Pullman campus) through Friday and then moved to Owen Science and Engineering Library next week. The sheets will be put up in the Owen ground floor conference room through the end of that week. Staff are encouraged to stop by, read and react to the sheets.

Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the May 29 meeting will be amended to take out the dollar amount committed for the Steering Committee's survey, as it might be confidential. With that exception, the minutes were approved for distribution.

Town Meeting

  • Approximately 45 people attended the Town Meeting. Planning Committee members were concerned that changes that are occurring in libraries, on the campus, and in the information environment were not mentioned. This points up the need for continuing efforts to get those issues out before the library staff. It was suggested that we could hold a Town Meeting focusing on issues that will affect us in the future. During discussion it was noted that there are many Library employees that know very little about ABI Inform, Virtual WSU, the journal use study, etc., let alone other issues facing the entire library, information and higher education environments.

  • Sharon Walbridge will compile the list of services to include ECLS service ideas and Marilyn Von Seggern will draft an introductory paragraph to accompany the list. The list will be sent out to all staff for their reaction as to what services they feel will in demand in the future. It will be stressed that this is not an exhaustive list and opportunity will be provided to add services to the list if staff so desire. We could also use this device to ask staff if there are areas about which they would like more information.

  • Today's Town Meeting was videotaped. ECLS Libraries will be asked to return their videos of the first Town Meeting and the second one will be added to the tapes and sent back to the them.

Organization Structure and Types

Marilyn Von Seggern and Mary Gilles will be providing Planning Committee members with information on organization structure and types. More information may be necessary as we begin the crucial discussion of this topic.
