Restricted Access

License agreements with vendors prevent us from making many of the databases listed on the WSU Libraries Gateway generally available on the Internet. We are complying with these restrictions in two ways, either by requiring WSU users to self-identify via our telnet gateway griffin.wsu.edu (login as griffin), or by using computers with an address ending in wsu.edu. Those using computers on the WSU network or a those with a WSU SLIP or PPP account should be able to access these databases. Sometimes there is an additional loginid and/or password required. Eligible users can obtain this information from reference in the library dealing with the subject of the database or on the campus with which they are affiliated.

PIN stands for personal identification number. This is a unique password that you choose. It must be entered following your id number in order to get to the resource. The PIN used here is the same PIN you use to View Patron Record, an option from the Griffin Catalog . If you have already set such a PIN then use that one here too.

If you are having trouble connecting to one or more of the databases on our web gateway menu, the following list may explain the possible causes and solutions. For more assistance, contact Janet Chisman.

PROBLEM: You are not a WSU affiliated user so the connection is denied. Our license agreements with the vendors of certain databases (ABI/Inform, Current Contents Search, etc.) permit only WSU students, faculty and staff to use the database from remote sites. Other databases are available to everyone everywhere.

SOLUTIONS:

• Use one of the unlimited access databases, if one suits your needs.
• Come to WSU's libraries to use the databases.
• Enroll at WSU.

PROBLEM: You are a WSU user, but are using an internet address not recognized by the service provider. This is a case where access is permitted only from certain specified locations (WSU campuses, WSU SLIP or PPP internet accounts).

SOLUTIONS:

• Use a computer on the WSU network.
• Use your WSU SLIP or PPP account, if you have one.
• Use our telnet connection and identify yourself with your name, library ID, and PIN as usual.

PROBLEM: Slow or no response. The service provider's computer is "down" or the internet is slow for one reason or another.

SOLUTIONS:

• Wait longer; be even more patient.
• Try again later.
• Come to the library and use our print resources - then you'll really know what slow response is!.

SOLUTIONS:

• Tell the browser where your telnet program is located on your computer. From your browser, look for an option that asks about supporting applications. For example, in Netscape 3.0 under the Options menu item, General Preferences option is a place to put the location information (drive:directory\subdirectory\filename.file extension) about telnet. Just type in the location of your telnet application and you will be able to use it from your browser.

• If you can't figure out how to configure your browser, copy down the telnet address of the resource (often it is given on the web page or View document source code to find it. It will look something like this HREF=telnet://address resource name. You want the address information between the // and the >. Exit your browser and go to your telnet program and use the address directly from the program.

• Obtain a telnet program and then use as in the two options above.
